Novel outline word count

How many words per chapter? Plan your novel by chapter and scene

Divide your target length by your number of chapters: an 80,000-word novel in 24 chapters averages about 3,333 words a chapter, and with two scenes to a chapter, about 1,667 words a scene. There is no standard chapter length; what matters is that the parts add up to the book you mean to write. Set a target, share it across acts and chapters, then track what you’ve drafted against the plan and save it as a CSV file.

Words per chapter for common lengths

The average chapter length is simple division. These figures are averages for planning, not targets for every chapter: a short, sharp chapter after a long one is a tool, not a mistake.

There is no standard chapter length

No publisher, award or style guide sets a length for chapters, and you won’t find one quoted here. Chapters within one book often vary a great deal, and genres differ in pace. What a plan by chapter gives you is control: you can see early that the middle is swallowing the book, or that the ending has 6,000 words to do the work of 20,000.

The overall length is where outside expectations do apply. The Nebula, Hugo and Bram Stoker rules all start the novel at 40,000 words, and publishers who state a range on their submission pages ask for anything from 50,000 words for some romance lines to 100,000 or more for some science fiction; the story length checker lists examples with their sources. Pick the target first, then plan the parts.

How the planner shares out the words

An 80,000-word target split into three acts of 20,000, 40,000 and 20,000 words, each act divided into chapters Act 1: 20,000 words Act 2: 40,000 words Act 3: 20,000 words 6 chapters of about 3,330 12 chapters of about 3,330 6 chapters of about 3,330 two scenes a chapter: about 1,667 words each
The default plan: 80,000 words in three acts of 6, 12 and 6 chapters at 25%, 50% and 25%.

Saving and sharing the plan as CSV

“Export CSV” saves the chapters as a comma-separated file, the plain table format that spreadsheets open, with the columns Chapter, Title, Act, Scenes, Planned words and Drafted words. Titles containing commas, quotation marks or line breaks are quoted the standard way, so they come back intact. A title that starts with =, +, − or @, which a spreadsheet might run as a formula, is saved with a leading apostrophe, one of the protections OWASP describes, and the apostrophe is removed again on import. “Import CSV” reads the same columns in any order and skips rows it can’t read, telling you how many.

Worked example

The plan above is an 80,000-word novel in three acts of 6, 12 and 6 chapters. Act 1 gets 20,000 words: two chapters of 3,340 and four of 3,330. Act 2 gets 40,000 over 12 chapters: four of 3,340 and eight of 3,330. With two scenes to a chapter, each scene is about 1,667 words. Draft the first six chapters at 21,400 words and the summary shows Act 1 at 107% of its plan and the book at 27% of its target, which is your cue to trim, or to let the plan for a later act shrink a little.

Common mistakes

Questions

How many words should a chapter be?

There is no rule. Divide your target length by your planned number of chapters for an average, such as 3,333 words for 80,000 words in 24 chapters, and let individual chapters run shorter or longer as the story needs.

How many chapters is an 80,000-word novel?

As many as the story needs. At 20 chapters the average is 4,000 words; at 30, about 2,667; at 40, 2,000. Choose the number that fits your scenes, then use the planner to see the average.

How many words is a scene?

Again, no rule: the planner divides each chapter’s planned words by its number of scenes. With 3,333-word chapters and two scenes each, scenes average about 1,667 words.

Can I open the CSV in a spreadsheet?

Yes. It is a standard comma-separated file with a header row. Edit it there, save it as CSV, and import it back; the columns can be in any order as long as they keep their names.

Where is my plan saved?

In your browser’s local storage on this device, under the name clipnovella-planner. Nothing is uploaded. Export a CSV to keep a copy elsewhere.
